Основана в 1905 в г. Чикаго Федерацией рудокопов Запада [ Western Federation of Miners] и некоторыми другими профсоюзами, возглавляемыми социалистами; строилась по производственному принципу. Среди ее первых лидеров были Ю. Дебс [ Debs, Eugene Victor] и Д. Де Леон [ De Leon, Daniel]. В 1908 Де Леон был исключен, а Дебс и Федерация шахтеров вышли из состава организации. Руководство организации возглавили В. Сент-Джон [St. John, Vincent] и У. Хейвуд [ Haywood, William Dudley (Big Bill)]. Члены организации, известные как "уобблиз" [ Wobblies], считали, что после всеобщей забастовки капитализм сменится индустриальной демократией. В 1909-11 ИРМ пыталась организовать неквалифицированных рабочих и иммигрантов в производственные профсоюзы [ industrial union], но натолкнулась на серьезное сопротивление со стороны федеральных властей. Ей удалось однако организовать стачки текстильщиков в г. Лоренсе, шт. Массачусетс, (1912) и г. Патерсоне, шт. Нью-Джерси (1913). В период первой мировой войны, в пик своей популярности, организация занималась антивоенной агитацией среди рабочих, насчитывала около 100 тыс. членов. Провела ряд массовых стачек и антивоенных выступлений. Предприниматели приняли контрмеры, а власти усилили преследования активистов ИРМ: в Аризоне забастовщиков выслали в пустыню, в Монтане линчевали [ lynching] активиста ИРМ Ф. Литтла [Little, Frank], а в Юте по обвинению в убийстве казнили рабочего-поэта Д. Хилла [ Hill, Joe] (1915), имя которого стало знаменем радикалов профсоюзного движения. Во многих штатах были приняты законы по борьбе с синдикализмом. В 1917 Министерство юстиции [ Department of Justice, U.S.] арестовало 200 активистов ИРМ за антивоенную пропаганду. После войны в атмосфере "красной угрозы" [ Red Scare] организация не смогла восстановить свое прежнее влияние. К середине 20-х гг. (1879-1915) Хилл, ДжоПрофсоюзный деятель, автор и исполнитель песен. Был моряком, в 1910 вступил в профсоюзное объединение Индустриальные рабочие мира (ИРМ) [ Industrial Workers of the World], был организатором нескольких забастовок. В 1913 стали печататься его песни. (1901-1990) Бриджес, Гарри (Элфред Брайант Рентон)Профсоюзный деятель. Родился в Австралии. В США с 1920, был профсоюзным организатором "Индустриальных рабочих мира (ИРМ)" [ Industrial Workers of the World]. Стал известен под прозвищем "Гарри". Работал портовым грузчиком. К 1933 организовал в Сан-Франциско местное отделение Межнациональной ассоциации портовых грузчиков [ International Longshoremen's Association]. В мае 1934 организовал забастовку, которая в конечном счете привела к признанию профсоюза и удовлетворению требований грузчиков. В 1935-37 организовал профсоюз - Тихоокеанская морская федерация [Maritime Federation of the Pacific], который вошел в состав КПП [ CIO], преобразовал его в Межнациональный союз портовых грузчиков и рабочих портовых складов [ International Longshoremen's Warehousemen's Union], став его президентом.
